IMPACT OF OUTSOURCING ON OPERATIONAL PERFORMANCE OF SELECTED MANUFACTURING FIRMS IN DELTA STATE, NIGERIA

This study investigates the impact of outsourcing on the operational performance of manufacturingfirms in Delta State, Nigeria. Against a backdrop ofsignificant infrastructural and economic challenges, firms increasingly adopt outsourcing as a strategic tool. Grounded in the Resource-Based View and Transaction Cost Economics, this research examines the specific relationships between Information Technology (IT), manufacturing, and logistics outsourcing and key operational performance metrics. A quantitative research design was employed, utilizing a structured questionnaire administered to a stratified random sample of 200 firms, yielding a 98.5% usable response rate. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation. The findings reveal statistically significant positive correlations between all three outsourcing types and operational performance, with manufacturing outsourcing demonstrating the strongest relationship. However, the benefits are contingent on critical mitigatingfactors, including effective vendor management, robust contractual agreements, and the capability to navigate region-specific risks such as data security concerns, quality consistency, and local infrastructural deficiencies. The study concludes that while outsourcing is a potent strategy for enhancing operational performance in this emerging economy context, its success is not automatic and requires a well-managed approach tailored to the unique constraints ofDelta State.
