Abstract
This paper investigates the phenomenon of banditry and its transformative effects on rural
community development in Kotangora and Mariga Local Government Areas, Niger State,
Nigeria. Banditry characterized by violent and criminal activities such as _ theft,
kidnappings, and armed assaults, has escalated in the study areas in recent years, creating
significant socio-economic challenges for rural communities. The objectives of the study
are to examine how banditry is affecting rural community development in Kontagora and
Mariga Local Government Areas of Niger State and what the government and the
communities are doing to tackle this menace. This study reviewed existing literature to get
a comprehensive view on how banditry impacts various dimensions of community
development, including agriculture, education, health, and infrastructural development.
The study reveals a direct correlation between the prevalence of banditry and the decline
in agricultural productivity, as farmers face threats to their safety and property, leading to
reduced crop yields and food insecurity. Furthermore, the continuous attacks by bandits
undermine educational opportunities for children, forcing schools to close or operate
under severe constraint with adverse effects on literacy rates and future prospects of youth. Health services are also critically affected, with healthcare workers reluctant to serve in
high-risk areas, leading to inadequate healthcare access for rural residents. Findings from
the study illustrate a cycle of impoverishment and despair as communities struggle to
recover from the economic impacts of banditry, making it difficult to invest in essential
infrastructure and social services. Findings of the study also revealed strategies for
mitigating the effects of banditry through community engagement, government
intervention, and collaborative security efforts, emphasizing the importance of local
initiatives in fostering resilience and ensuring sustainable rural development. To curb the
menace of banditry, the study recommends the need to strengthen community cohesion,
enhance security, and promote development initiatives tailored to the unique challenges
posed by banditry in these localities.
