Abstract
The contemporary international system is undergoing a significant transition from a unipolar
order dominated by the United States to an emerging multipolar order increasingly shaped by
China's expanding global influence. This shift has profound implications for governance and
development in Africa, particularly in Nigeria, where both powers have pursued distinct
engagement strategies. While the United States has traditionally advanced liberal democracy,
constitutional governance, and human rights through diplomacy, foreign assistance, and
multilateral institutions, China has strengthened its influence through economic diplomacy,
infrastructure investment, trade, and development cooperation with limited political
conditionalities. This study examines the implications of this evolving global power transition
for governance in Africa, with particular emphasis on Nigeria. Anchored on Soft Power Theory,
the study adopts a qualitative research design based on secondary data drawn from peerreviewed journal articles, policy documents, institutional reports, and other scholarly sources.
The findings indicate that although U.S. engagement has contributed to democratic reforms and
institutional development, China's development-oriented approach has gained increasing
acceptance among African governments because it prioritizes economic growth, infrastructure
development, and state sovereignty. The study argues that the emerging multipolar order
presents both opportunities and governance challenges for Nigeria. It concludes that Nigeria
should adopt a pragmatic and balanced foreign policy that leverages the comparative
advantages of both powers while strengthening democratic institutions, enhancing
accountability, promoting inclusive governance, and pursuing sustainable development
consistent with its national priorities and socio-political realities.
