Abstract

This study examined empirically the effect of sustainability reporting on financial performance of quoted non-financial firms in Nigeria. The study covers a period of fifteen years with sustainability being represented by economic reporting, social reporting, and environmental reporting, while financial performance is represented by return on assets and return on equity. This study adopts the expost facto research design, while the General Least Square (GLS) statistical technique, descriptive and correlation analysis was used to ascertain the effect of the sustainability on firm performance. The results show that reporting of economic activities has a negative effect on the performance of quoted non –financial companies in Nigeria. Reporting of social activities has no significant effect on the performance of quoted non-financial companies in Nigeria. Reporting of environmental activities has negative effect on the performance of quoted non-financial companies in Nigeria. The study recommended that management should exert more effort in disclosure of economic activities and less effort in disclosure of social activities Also, firms should strive to improve the clarity and consistency of their sustainability reporting processes. This involves ensuring that the disclosure of economic, environmental, and social activities is transparent and easily understandable for stakeholders.
