IMPACT OF CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY (CSR) EXPENDITURE ON FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE OF LISTED DEPOSIT MONEY BANKS IN NIGERIA

This study examined the impact of corporate social responsibility expenditure on financial performance of listed deposit money banks in Nigeria. On the methodology, the ex-post factor research design was employed in an attempt to achieving the objective of the study. Asample of eleven (11) out of a total population of fourteen (14) listed deposit money banks in Nigeria was selected for the study. Data were extracted from the annual reports and accounts of the sampled listed deposit money banks in Nigeria for a period of 10 years (2012-2021). Analysis of the data collected showed that, there is significant influence of corporate social responsibility on financial performance of listed deposit money banks in Nigeria at 1% level of significance. In addition, firm size influences the relationship between corporate social responsibility and financial performance (ROA). Thus, it was recommended that, Deposit money banks should embrace idea of fulfilling their corporate social responsibility to its immediate environment by participating in activities that will improve the life of the society at large such as, educational donations, waste management, pollution reduction, and carry out other actions capable of strengthening their reputation, legitimacy and building competitive advantage.
